Colt Model 1849 Pocket percussion revolver s/n 272028/L manufactured circa 1865 with a six inch barrel. It is in .31 caliber with an octagonal barrel with loading lever with large iron brass trigger-guard. The barrel and cylinder are blued, with the frame, hammer and loading lever casehardened. The iron back-strap and iron trigger-guard are silver-plated. The grips are one-piece varnished walnut. The L suffix suggests that the gun was destined for the UK market, but with the absence of British proof-marks, it obviously did not cross the “pond’.
It bears the one-line address ‘ADDRESS COL SAM’L COLT / NEW-YORK US AMERICA.’ and the frame is stamped on the left side with ‘COLTS/PATENT’ on two lines. The cylinder has the roll design of the stagecoach holdup scene.
There is some original finish remaining, but back-strap and trigger-guard have been refinished. The cylinder scene is about 50% with areas of light pitting. The five cylinder pins are partially intact. The revolver is in fair to good condition with all matching numbers including the wedge. The bore rates 6/10, with good rifling . The gun is in fair working order.
