Very good, British-proofed, factory scroll engraved, cased Colt Model 1849 London Pocket Percussion revolver s/n 2151/. with four inch barrel and select walnut varnished one-piece grips. Manufactured at Colt’s London manufactory, circa 1854.
Factory engraving to barrel, frame, loading lever, hammer, wedge, back-strap and trigger-guard. Gothic style ‘COLTS PATENT’ within an unfurled banner, hand engraved on the left side of the frame. Four inch barrel with two-line address ‘ADDRESS. COL: COLT. / LONDON’. within finials and pointing in arrows, at either end.
Cased in its original mahogany case with deep blue velvet lining and original “DIRECTIONS FOR LOADING COLT’S PISTOLS” label which is pasted in the lid. The case has a vacant brass escutcheon on the top of the lid.
The London Pocket percussion revolver is in very good condition, retaining a pleasing patina and most of its original silver-plating. The barrel, cylinder and trigger are blued, the frame, loading lever and hammer are case coloured and the iron back-strap and large rounded iron trigger-guard are silver-plated. Wonderful one-piece select walnut grips, retain most of their original high gloss piano varnish. The cylinder scene is 50% and there are remnants of all five cylinder pins on the back of the cylinder. All matching numbers, including the wedge which is also numbered “2151”. The bore is very fine 8/10 bright with strong rifling. The screw heads are excellent and the action is in good working order.
Original standard Colt London mahogany case lined in deep blue velvet, partitioned to fit a five inch pistol. Factory London Colt cases were made to fit five or six inch pistols. The only four inch cases would have been made for special presentation sets.
Accessories include: an excellent ‘JAMES DIXON / & SONS / SHEFIELD’ bag type powder flask marked ‘COLTS POCKET FLASK’, large galvanised W. & C Eley 500 count cap tin with green label, iron ‘COLT’S PATENT’ .31 calibre mould for casting a round and conical shaped lead bullet, cleaning rod with wooden handle, nipple key and key. All accessories are in very good condition.
Overall, a very nice and hard to find, cased, factory engraved Colt Model 1849 London Pocket with rare four inch barrel, manufactured at Colt’s manufactory in London in 1854.
