Ultra rare, cased British proofed Colt London Model Pocket of Navy .36 calibre percussion revolver s/n 17197/L with desirable 6½ inch octagonal barrel and rare one line barrel address which reads “ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON”. Only a few examples are known with the London address and ultra rare with 6½ inch barrel with London address. Manufactured circa 1863.
The 6 ½ inch octagonal barrel has London proof and view marks on the left side, with a brass cone front sight. There are also alternating London proof and view marks in the cylinder flutes. The frame is stamped “COLTS/PATENT” on the left side and “36 CAL” stamped on the left trigger guard shoulder. The barrel, cylinder, back-strap and trigger-guard retains some blue and the loading lever, hammer and frame retains traces of colour case hardening. The revolver is complimented with varnished one-piece walnut grips. All serial numbers “17197/L” are matching including barrel, frame, back-strap and trigger-guard. The suffix letter “L” stands for London. The wedge and arbour pin are also numbered “17197”.
Cased in its English partitioned fitted oak case lined with green beige. The case contains accessories, all in good order including a “JAMES DIXON & SONS / & SONS / SHEFFIELD” bag shaped powder flask, L-shaped nipple key and screw driver, blued .36 calibre mould marked “COLTS PATENT”, small “W&C ELEY”, cap tin with green label for percussion caps made expressly for Colt’s PT Belt & Pocket Pistols, L-shaped nipple key and screwdriver, cleaning rod and key.
The revolver, case and accessories are all in good condition. The revolver retains about 25% original bright dark blue and traces of original case colours. The one-piece walnut grips retain 90% are very fine and retain most of their original gloss varnish. Mechanically excellent and in good working order.
This is rare gun which was manufactured at the Hartford factory and shipped to the London Agency at 14 Pall Mall, London in 1863. It is worthy of a good Colt collection.
