British-proofed Colt First Model derringer serial number 2823, in obsolete .41 rim-fire short calibre. Total numbers of this model produced, is thought to be about 6,500. All First models were manufactured circa 1867 to 1890 at the Hartford factory. Markings on top of the barrel are: ‘COLT’S PT. F.A.MFG. Co / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.’ with large ‘No 1 straddling both lines and a Maltese cross motif at either end of the address. The frame has the standard amount of factory engraving. The serial numbers 2823 are stamped on the butt and under the barrel, towards the breech end. On the right side of the frame, under the barrel release button is stamped ‘41 CAL’. There are British proof marks stamped on the left side of the barrel and on the left side of the frame, also under the barrel, adjacent to the serial number.
It has a blued barrel retaining 50% plus original even blue finish and an engraved iron frame, which shows no silver-plating. The hammer shows traces of case colours.
All screws are in very good condition. The bore is 8 out of 10 with small areas of pitting. The action is perfect. Very nice example.
